The Vibrant, Sparkling & Exciting “Engagement Season” Is Now Upon Us!!
The start of the holiday season is also the start of a little something called – Proposal Season; others call it “The Engagement Season.”
According to RealSimple magazine – this time of year, from Thanksgiving to Valentine’s Day, is when tons of couples get engaged. While you could assume spring and summer take the cake for the most proposals, according to insights from WeddingWire’s 2020 Newlywed Report, the most popular month to get engaged is December – by a landslide. Nearly 19% of the entire year’s engagements happen in December, per WeddingWire, and seven out of 10 of the most popular dates to get engaged fall in December. But in 2020, Valentine’s Day took the top spot as the most popular date to get engaged. Let’s face it, receiving a beautiful sparkly engagement on the number one day of love beats a box of chocolates and a dozen roses any day!
New Year’s Day came in as the second popular day for wedding proposals in 2020. Again Covid-19 probably had a lot to do with this date. New Year’s Eve 2020 and New Year’s Day 2021 was a tough holiday for many of us as we celebrated getting through the Covid-19 threat of the previous year and the faith and hope of 2021 with vaccines and life looking a little brighter. Getting that sparkly engagement ring on such an emotional and loving day was the most promising thing to have received.
Coming in last year at number 3 was Christmas Day. The typical engagement season (Thanksgiving through Valentine’s Day), according to Weddingwire.com, usually centers around Christmas time. But, again, with the heavy presence of Covid-19 Christmas of 2020, it looked quite different for many families. Once again, the faith and hope of having made it through 2020 probably helped prompt the celebratory excitement to pop the proposal questions.
Christmas Eve was 4th on the list of popular engagement days. Some families exchange gifts on Christmas Eve or have Christmas Eve dinner for the festive occasion.
Another piece of proposal tidbit is National Proposal Day. Yes, there is a National Proposal Day. It is March 20th. According to daysoftheyear.com, National Proposal Day was founded by John Michael O’Loughlin, who initially created the holiday after watching his cousin’s boyfriend string her along for years without sealing the proposal. So O’Loughlin designed this holiday to remind people of the possibility of proposing before life passes by and it’s too late!
Because it falls not too long after Valentine’s day, O’Loughlin decided to place this holiday on the vernal equinox when the stars and planets align to make life-changing events happen. This time, at the change from winter to spring, brings a sense of new beginnings, and a wedding proposal is certainly a new beginning. The Vernal Equinox is the day at which point the stars and the planet align to make some life changing decisions. The Autumn equinox is also celebrated as the national proposal day. The amount of day and night are equal during the autumnal equinox, and many wish to get engaged on this day which falls in September. O’Loughlin says he chose to nudge procrastinating young lovers into matrimony on these days because the equinoxes symbolize “the equal efforts of the two required to compromise the successful marriage,” according to Huffpost.com.
Couples shouldn’t get carried away. Huffpost.com said the holiday is also meant to spark a conversation about the possibility of a future proposal, according to ProposalDay.com.
The day quickly gained traction and spread all over the internet, with more people taking part on National Proposal Day. The most popular days for wedding proposals are certainly Christmas Day, Valentine’s Day, and New Year’s Day, but National Proposal Day is consistently rising in popularity, with more engagements happening on that day every year, so perhaps it will be up there with the most popular holidays one day.
Wedding proposals come in all shapes and forms. Some people make significant and extravagant proposals, and others prefer to keep them private or personal. There is no wrong way to make it take place. The important thing is to be sure that this is the person you want to spend the rest of your life with.
In 2022, National Proposal Day of March 20th happens to be a Saturday. It sounds like a sparkly and emotional weekend if you ask me!
